61. Take a Photo at Balanced Rock
I almost missed this place....well, except for the big rock balanced precariously on the hill! This rock is over 48 feet tall, 55 feet wide and weighs 40 tons. All this balances on a 3 feet 17 inch pedestal of rock. Kind of like if an elephant were to balance itself on a peanut. It's an incredible site!
As you can see by the picture, it is only a short hike and climb up to the base. However, watch for bees during the summer months. I would have had a better picture than this, however, some bees decided I had disturbed them enough for the day and they ran me out of dodge. No kidding. Not a fun moment for me, but I'm still glad I got to see such a cool Idaho landmark.
Location: From Boise take I-84 towards Twin Falls about 85 miles. Take Exit 141 US-26 towards Gooding/Hagerman. Turn right toward US-30E and go about 18 miles. Take a right on Magic Waters Rd/4800 N. Rd and then continue onto 800 E/continue onto 4700 N./continue onto 400 E./ then right onto Castleford Glenns Ferry Rd. Go about 2.5 miles. It is on the left. There is a pull-in place where you can picnic, read the historical notes, hike and take some pictures.
Camping: There is a camping area just up the road along Salmon Falls Creek. Balanced Rock Park. Its a really nice campground with lots of shade. Its for tents only, there aren't any RV hookups.
Special Notes: This is one of those places you stop to see on your way to see many other things. The campground is nice, but I don't know if I would make it my destination. Twin Falls is just up the road and Jackpot, Nevada just a little further. This would be a great place to stop by on your way there. It is amazing and you don't want to miss a chance to see it at least once.
