42. Riggins Rodeo
The first weekend of May every year starts rodeo season off with a BANG at the Riggins Rodeo. From the beautiful scenery and bucking bulls to the cooler races...yes, I said cooler races....it's a party you don't want to miss. I have attended the Riggins Rodeo for more years than I will ever admit and every time it never disappoints. As locals say "It's the biggest Redneck Party of the year!" About those cooler races...people actually ride down the hill that hovers over the arena in coolers. Crazy? Yes! But what a show!
Here are the details so you can plan to join the party next year!
Location: Riggins, Idaho. Riggins is located 150 miles north of Boise. You can reach there on Highway 55 or Highway 95. It is a town with a population of about 400 but that number triples during the rodeo weekend.
History Notes: This year was the 68th year of the rodeo.
Accomodations: There are several hotels in the area. (Salmon Rapids Lodge, Salmon River Motel, Big Iron Motel and Riggins Motel). They fill up fast so if you are planning on wanting a room it is best to book it at least two months in advance.
There are several camping spots around town (Riverside RV Park, Spring Bar Campground and River Village RV Park).
Eats: Riggins boasts several great restaurants along the main strip through town. (My favorite is River Rock Cafe. They make a great bloody mary.)
Special Notes: This is not a rodeo you want to take kids to. It is definitely an adult party that runs all day and most of the night. The rodeo is held on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday night is the big party in town with the streets full of people from the time the rodeo finishes until early morning.
** If you like to fish, bring your pole and catch some fish along the Salmon River on your down time or on your way home. **
